THE EYES THAT SEEM TO FOLLOW YOU AS YOU WALK PAST; THE POSES THAT WOULD MAKE A REAL BODY ACHE TO THE BONE. SHOP DUMMIES, OR MANNEQUINS, ARE EVERYWHERE AND AT A GLANCE, APPEAR IDENTICAL. 

Actually, the art of mannequin making takes a far from a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s an art form; identifying the look of the time, balancing the aspirational with the realistic, and delivering a product that displays fashions in the way that’s perceived as most attractive at the time. 

The manufacturing process is also individual. High-end mannequins are handmade from fibreglass in resin moulds, sanded smooth and then spray painted. Even the more tailor’s-dummy style ones are hand crafted, this time from surprisingly-strong papier mâché.

There’s a mannequin for every situation, reflecting the requirements of the shop and the perceptions of the consumer. The owner of Proportion London, a leading mannequin manufacturer based in London, is guided by the need to drive sales by making potential customers think ‘I could look like that’ (BBC News Magazine Stop/Start, 2013). So, for example, in the eighties female mannequins reflected the Wonderbra look and in the new millennium proportions changed to mimic size zero influences. 

Today there’s a somewhat revolutionary movement to make sure mannequins reflect the real people that will be buying the clothes on the models. Mannequins are becoming more representative and yet are remaining aspirational proving that, whatever our size or shape, we can all look good. We’re not all ‘one size’; we’re unique and we want our fashion and shopping experiences to reflect that. 

That’s exactly how we feel about our foodservice solutions — one size doesn’t fit all, so we work hard to make sure every one of our workplace restaurants accurately reflects the tastes and requirements of the people it’s serving. We believe it’s all about working out the specific needs of the people at a site and then creating an offering that meets their requirements. Bespoke. Attractive. Delicious.
