Walking the walk

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT CLAIMS THAT ARE PRETTY IMPRESSIVE MAKE MY NATURAL BRITISH CYNICISM KICK IN AND MY FIRST QUESTION IS: YOU CAN TALK THE TALK, BUT CAN YOU WALK THE WALK?

Supporting the health and wellbeing of our customers is fundamentally important to us — and here’s an update on what we’re doing about it.

Our commitments echo and run alongside the goals enshrined in the Department of Health’s Responsibility Deal, to which the Compass family as a whole is a signatory. The Responsibility Deal is a rolling programme of targets for the foodservice, retail and restaurant industries designed to improve the nation’s health.

Since Compass first signed up to the Responsibility Deal it’s achieved a number of important milestones — including calorie and salt reduction, introducing nutritional labelling for every dish and boosting healthy choices.

Here’s how we’re doing:

  • Thousands of our customers can now make informed choices about the food they eat in our restaurants thanks to our Know Your Food programme.

  • We’re helping our customers to reduce their saturated fat intake by switching to Flora Buttery in our cooking.

  • We’re also helping our customers to reduce their salt consumption by reducing the size of our salt sachets.

  • We’ve removed all artificial trans fats from the food we serve.

  • Many Eurest sites already have our health and wellbeing programmes in place, and our rollout will continue into 2013.

  • We now offer a 500 calorie meal concept; it’s been a roaring success and is nominated for an industry award.

  • Compass has signed up to the Hospitality and Foodservice Agreement, committing to working with waste reduction campaign WRAP to achieve collective environmental targets for the industry.

None of this work stands still of course — 2013 will see us step up the pace in cutting calories and boosting servings of fruit and vegetables in our units. And our Know Your Food programme will keep growing and evolving.

The age of healthy and delicious really is here.
