When the sun is shining and the birds are singing, we like to get outside and enjoy a picnic. Whether you share it with friends, family or a partner, sitting out on a rug and enjoying your lunch is a great way to spend a summer afternoon.

A food revolution
The picnic as we know it has evolved somewhat over the centuries. The term saw its first use in the 17th century, describing meals where everyone involved brought a bit of something along to share with others.

Following the French Revolution, royal parks became open to the public for the first time, which saw the practice of picnicking become very popular as people took advantage of these beautiful open spaces.

A worldwide phenomenon
Today, picnicking is still a favoured pastime, with many places providing the perfect spot for an outdoor feast when the sun is shining.

Many countries even have a particular day when people like to head to their nearest park for lunch. For example, Americans like to celebrate Independence Day with a picnic, while Italians prefer Easter Monday for their al fresco dining.

A meal with friends
Probably the most important part of a picnic (other than the food) is the people. Eating outdoors during the summer months is an ideal way to bring people together, sharing the sunshine with friends and family.

It’s just one example of how we all enjoy our meals more when they become a social experience. Great food is even better with great company, whether indoors at a restaurant or outdoors in the sun.

Spending time with friends and sharing food is what makes picnics so much fun. We understand that taking a break and relaxing with others is a key part of promoting wellbeing in your workplace. We can’t promise the sun will be shining every day, but in our restaurants we always bring you the best elements of a picnic — making sure your people have somewhere they can come together and share a delicious meal with friends.
