Shake up your wake up

HOW ABOUT STARTING YOUR DAY WITH A SPRING IN YOUR STEP AND A MIND THAT’S JUST FIZZING WITH FRESH POTENTIAL? HOW ABOUT WAKING UP KNOWING IT’S GOING TO BE A GOOD DAY? OR EVEN, LIKE THE QUEEN OF HEARTS IN ALICE IN WONDERLAND, AIMING TO BELIEVE SIX IMPOSSIBLE THINGS BEFORE BREAKFAST?

Well maybe that last one’s a bit of a stretch because the problem with impossible things is, well, it’s a hard old slog to achieve them. But other aims are well within your grasp if you tackle them right.

We believe that making things easy makes them possible. You don’t plunge into running a marathon; you start by jogging to the next lamppost. You don’t produce a banquet on your first attempt; you begin with crispy cakes or boiling an egg. Turning what can seem like a mammoth task into small, achievable chunks works. And, before you know it, you’re reaching those seemingly unachievable, ‘impossible’ goals.

Take our ‘shake up your wake up’ healthier breakfast promotion this January. We all know breakfast is fundamentally important to helping us get the most out of our days but asking you to create a whole new super-healthy habit overnight is unrealistic.

Instead, this month we’re challenging you to make one small change to your breakfast choices to make your start that little bit healthier. All it takes is one small change every day: swapping a fried egg for a poached one, opting for a fresh blueberry porridge topper over golden syrup or enjoying a fruit smoothie instead of a morning coffee.

It’s all part of our wider award-winning Know Your Food programme, introduced in 2012 to let our customers know about what’s in the food we serve, where it comes from and how it gets to their plates. We take inspiration from a huge variety of sources: ‘Shake up your wake up’, for example, is an extension of our support for Farmhouse Breakfast Week (26 January to 1 February 2014), an annual celebration of breakfast organised by the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board.

So let’s go; let’s shake up your wake up by changing one thing before your breakfast — make the healthy choice.
