SOMETIMES POLICIES AND TERMINOLOGY GET IN THE WAY OF INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT MESSAGES. SOMETIMES WE'VE HEARD THE WORDS SO MANY TIMES THEY DON'T HOLD ANY REAL MEANING ANYMORE. CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY (CR) MESSAGES REALLY SUFFER IN THIS WAY BECAUSE, UNFORTUNATELY, TOO MANY BUSINESSES HAVE TALKED THE TALK BUT NOT WALKED THE WALK, AND PERCEPTIONS NOW ARE JADED.
We hope we’re turning this around by focusing on what our CR actions deliver for our clients. We’re in the business of specific, targeted planning; no hiding behind generic policies and blanket statements. And we make sure we produce metrics that we can share with our clients so they can see the steps we’re taking, and the benefits it brings to their business. In fact in many cases, our CR targets absorb those of our clients, so working with us helps them meet their organisation’s CR aims.
To make things even more measurable and transparent we’ve signed up to ISO14001, committing to having an environmental management system that stands up to rigorous scrutiny. And we’re incredibly proud to be the only organisation in our industry to have ISO14001 accreditation across our whole business.
We’ve also embarked on an ongoing initiative to reduce the CO2 emissions of our supply line by five million tonnes in the UK over a 12 month period — that’s pretty much an equivalent saving in road miles, and the great news is we’re halfway there already.
Plus we’ve entered into a voluntary agreement with WRAP, committing us to working towards collective environmental targets for the foodservice industry: to reduce food and associated packaging waste by five per cent by the end of 2015 and to increase recycling rates of food and packaging waste to at least 70 per cent by the end of 2015.
So no hype, just solid commitments and actions. That’s the Eurest way.
