Peanut butter is as ubiquitous as sliced bread. But did you know that it's actually one of the most versatile tools in your kitchen?
You spread it on your toast, you pair it with jam for a sandwich and maybe you even bake it into cookies every now and again. That’s about the extent of most people’s peanut-butter experience. But that could be about to change.
Peanut butter is actually a wonderfully versatile ingredient that you can use in a variety of recipes. And what’s even more surprising is that it has a few non-food related, household uses that we’re sure the inventor of peanut butter, Marcellus Gilmore Edson (1849-1940), never considered.
To go through every use of peanut butter would take more blog space than we’ve got here (Google it, you’ll see). So, instead, we’ve chosen three of the most interesting and intriguing uses for this most modest of ingredients to share with you.
Three alternative uses for peanut butter
1. To make hummus
The popularity of hummus has exploded in the past few years, with many people starting to make their own at home. But if you’ve ever tried this yourself, you’ll know that there’s one hummus ingredient that’s not so easy to find — tahini. Luckily, peanut butter makes a delicious alternative — and one that you’re more likely to have in the cupboard.
2. To stop hiccups
You’ve tried all the tricks to stop hiccups — holding your breath, giving yourself a fright, drinking water while pinching your nose — but peanut butter could hold the real solution. Slowly eating a spoonful could do the trick. It worked on a chronic hiccuper, and it could work for you too. Plus you get to eat a spoon of peanut butter. Win-win.
3. To clean your house
This could be the most surprising of all the uses we found for peanut butter — as a household cleaner. It’s true though, many people use peanut butter as a cleaner that’s free of harsh chemicals. It can get stains off floors, chewing gum out of hair, and the garlic smell off your hands. We haven’t tried any of these ourselves though, so try them at your own risk!
Celebrating great food
As strange as it may sound, in many ways peanut butter represents what we’re passionate about — great food. It’s delicious, good value, healthy and incredibly versatile; everything food should be. And that’s worth celebrating.
