Lunchtime learning

Lunchtime in the UK is a constantly shifting concept. Discover how we’ve managed to get a good grip on it.

Waxing lyrical about lunch

Lunch means different things to different people. As lunchtime approaches you might start to daydream about a delicious deli sandwich. Or maybe you’re a snacker — grazing throughout the day without the need for formal meals.

Whatever form lunch takes — we love it. It is, after all, our bread and butter (so to speak). And that’s why we were so excited to get our hands on Compass Group’s recently released research into lunchtime trends.

Keeping track of trends

The research looked at how long we spend at lunch in the UK, as well as what we eat and where. And the results were fascinating.

It turns out that times have changed. We, as a nation, are eating lunch like no other generation before. So, let’s take a look at some of the discoveries.

Remarkable revelations

It turns out that lunch breaks are getting shorter. In fact we have about 34 minutes — three minutes shorter than the European average. And that has a knock-on effect, leading to a significant growth in the already popular 'grab and go' market.

When we say significant growth, what we really mean is an explosion. An amazing 91 per cent of us now pick up a sandwich or wrap for lunch. And half of us now eat at our desks — despite the known damage that this can do to your productivity.

On top of that, it looks like millennials and their idiosyncratic ways are starting to change the lunchtime landscape. Almost half of millennials say they’d like to meet with colleagues more often over lunch, in comparison to 23 per cent of baby boomers. So maybe, over time, we’ll see fewer people shackling themselves to a desk-based lunch.

Building on a strong foundation

Why do we value research like this? Because we’re in the business of providing the best possible lunch to workers around the UK. That’s why we’ve already built up a huge bank of our own research — with white papers on everything from the importance of breakfast, to the decline of the evening meal.

What are our conclusions from this wealth of research? Well, it’s clear to us that the importance of eating a healthy, nutritious and filling meal is rising. We know that eating well helps you to work well. But when you’re pressed for time because of a short lunch break, that can be difficult. And that’s why so many of us are reaching for a sandwich.

Our solution is to provide our clients and customers with great food, that’s also convenient. With great service and plenty of variety, we make it easy to eat a proper meal — even when you’ve only got half an hour.
