Don’t sweat the summer heat

The sun is shining, it’s a glorious day and the outdoors is calling. Dashing to the door, you’re off to play some sports, eat a picnic or maybe just sit out where it’s warm. But hold on a second… have you thought about how you’re going to stay hydrated in the summer heat?

On an average day, women need to drink 1.6 litres and men need 2. When it’s hot you’ll need even more to avoid the risk of sunstroke. The good news is there are loads of ways to stay healthy, hydrated and happy.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way. When it comes to hydration, water is king. It’s cheap, healthy, and drinking it brings a wealth of health benefits. You’ll get better skin, healthier kidneys, and more power of concentration.

Maybe you feel like something a little different? It may come as a surprise, but milk is an effective way to hydrate. Its mix of protein, sodium and carbohydrates help your body to retain fluid, so it’s perfect after exercise.

After something a little sweeter? Then give fruit a go — it’s a sweet treat and a hydrator. Juicy fruits such as watermelon, orange and strawberries are full of vitamins and minerals as well as fluids. They’ll keep you from getting too thirsty and give you one of your five-a-day at the same time.   

When the sun’s out, the temperature’s up and you’re having fun, it’s easy to forget about keeping hydrated. You have to take some time to think about what your body needs.
