A tale of the unexpected

A CHINESE FISHMONGER GOT MORE THAN HE BARGAINED FOR WHEN HE DISCOVERED A SQUID HE’D CAUGHT HAD A LIVE BOMB INSIDE IT. THE EIGHT-INCH EXPLOSIVE HAD BEEN EATEN BY THE FISH, WHICH WAS SEEMINGLY STILL HAPPY — UNTIL IT GOT CAUGHT, OBVIOUSLY.

The fishmonger said his knife hit the metal of the bomb when he was gutting the fish. “This sort of squid lives close to the shore and normally makes a meal of small fish and prawns,” he said. “Perhaps he thought the bomb was his favourite food and gulped it down. He certainly had a big belly when he was caught.”

This is surely a tale of the unexpected. The poor squid certainly got the rough end of the stick when it ate a bomb and then swiftly got caught. And the fishmonger was literally dicing with death when he took his knife to the rusty explosive.

It’s an extreme but attention-grabbing reminder that we all face the unexpected all of the time.

In the world of business it’s best to remove as much risk as you can from your day-to-day to help you deal with the unforeseen when it occurs.
