The Barbican Foodhall scooped the award for 'Best Restaurant, bar or club in another space' and the Lounge received the accolade for 'Best Independent Restaurant' at the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards. The Lounge has also received the prize for 'Best Bar/Lounge/Club' at the 2011 International Hotel & Property Award annual award ceremony which was held in Monte Carlo. Both spaces were designed by multi-award-winning architects and designers SHH, under the direction of Senior Designer Helen Hughes.

Both venues, located in one of London's iconic buildings - the Barbican Arts Centre, wowed the judges with their impressive design and layout.

The International Hotel & Property Awards are organised by leading design magazine design et al, commending design, recognising talent, creating opportunities and offering inspiration. Short-listed entries are presented online and voting is open to industry professionals as well as design et al readers, clients and customers.

The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards reward both designers and operators for design excellence. The judging panel consists of industry leaders including magazine editors, restaurant founders and designers.

A destination restaurant and lounge bar, the Barbican Lounge is representative of the Barbican Centre's world-renowned reputation for art and performance. The bold design blends a striking colour palette of peacock green - an exact colour match to an image of the Barbican lake in summer - with splashes of Chinese red, historically used as a reference colour throughout the Barbican Centre.

Respect has been paid to the original architecture of the building including its concrete ceilings and aggregate walls. The traditional is complemented by modern and eclectic touches including vintage and bespoke furniture, feature areas and lighting.

Focal points include the kitchen, clad in solid timber, whilst the striking bar, which continues through the glazing onto the outside terrace, is in black glass with a black mosaic bar front.

Commenting on the award wins, Compass Group UK & Ireland's Nick Rudlin, Director of Operations of the Barbican Foodhall and Lounge said, "This recognition is testament to the hard work and commitment of the designers, architects and the teams working at both the Foodhall and Lounge and we are thrilled to have won three great accolades. We look forward to continuing to welcome guests and hope they will relax and enjoy the comfort and design of both venues as much as the great food on offer."
